Accessibility

Accessibility statement

Our members are older than the provincial average. A site that is hard to read is a site that excludes them, so this is not a box-ticking exercise for us.

1. Our target

This website is built to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. We build to that standard regardless of whether the branch is exempt from the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation as an organisation with fewer than fifty employees.

2. What we have done specifically

  • 18px minimum body text throughout, rather than the 16px web default, with a fluid type scale that grows on larger screens.
  • 16px minimum for legal and footer text. Small print is never smaller than that, anywhere, including the footer legal block.
  • Contrast of at least 4.5:1 for all body and legal text, verified against the actual background colours in use.
  • Simple, single-level navigation. No mega-menus, no hover-only reveals, no menus that disappear when your hand shakes.
  • Large targets. Buttons are at least 48px tall, well above the 44px minimum, and links in body text sit on generous line-height.
  • Visible focus. A thick navy focus ring follows the keyboard, and every interactive element is reachable with Tab alone.
  • A printable Rules of Play. Some members would simply rather have it on paper, so the rules page carries a print button and a dedicated print stylesheet.
  • Motion respects your settings. If your operating system asks for reduced motion, animation is switched off rather than merely shortened.
  • The countdown is readable by screen readers as plain text, not only as an animated set of digits.
  • Errors are described in words, never by colour alone.

3. How we test

  • Automated checks with axe-core, targeting zero critical issues.
  • A full keyboard-only pass on every page before release.
  • Manual review at 200% and 400% browser zoom.
  • Testing on iOS Safari, Chrome on Android, Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari on macOS, with attention to older devices.

4. Conformance detail

Against WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the criteria that matter most for this audience and how we meet them:

WCAG 2.1 AA conformance detail
RequirementHow this site meets it
1.1.1 Non-text contentEvery image and illustration carries a written description. Decorative marks are hidden from assistive technology rather than described pointlessly.
1.3.1 Info and relationshipsHeadings are a real hierarchy, tables have proper headers and captions, forms have labels attached to fields — not placeholder text pretending to be a label.
1.4.3 Contrast (minimum)4.5:1 or better for all body, legal and footer text. Red is used for buttons and accents, never as the only way information is conveyed.
1.4.4 Resize textType is set in relative units and reflows to 400% zoom without loss of content or horizontal scrolling.
1.4.10 ReflowSingle-column at 320px wide. Wide tables scroll inside their own container so the page itself never scrolls sideways.
2.1.1 / 2.1.2 KeyboardEverything is operable by keyboard alone. The age gate and the leaving-the-site interstitial trap focus while open and return it when closed.
2.4.1 Bypass blocksA "Skip to main content" link is the first thing the keyboard reaches on every page.
2.4.7 Focus visibleA thick navy focus ring, never removed, on every interactive element.
2.5.5 Target sizeButtons are at least 48px tall against a 44px requirement; primary buttons are 56–60px.
3.3.1 / 3.3.3 ErrorsForm errors are stated in words next to the field, announced to assistive technology, and say what to do about it.
4.1.3 Status messagesThe jackpot figure and countdown are announced politely rather than interrupting, and are also exposed as plain text.

5. Getting this content another way

Nothing on this site is only available online.

  • A printed copy of the Rules of Play is kept behind the bar and will be handed to anyone who asks, without explanation.
  • Telephone 613-652-4516 and a volunteer will read out any page on this site, take a hall-rental enquiry, or talk you through how a 50/50 works.
  • Large-print copies of the rules, the FAQ or the winners list can be produced on request. Tell us what size helps.
  • When ticket sales open, anyone who does not want to buy online can be helped in person at the hall.

6. Known limitations

  • The ticket checkout is not ours. Once you leave for the raffle supplier's site, their accessibility applies. We will assess a supplier's accessibility before contracting one, and we will say here what we found.
  • No map is embedded yet. The contact page currently shows a schematic image with a text description rather than an interactive map, because embedding one has cookie and security implications we have not yet settled.
  • Photographs are not yet supplied. Illustrations stand in for them. Every photograph the branch supplies will carry a written description before it is published.

7. Tell us if we have got it wrong

If any part of this site is difficult for you to use, we want to hear about it — specifically, not politely.

We aim to acknowledge accessibility feedback within five working days and to say what we intend to do about it. The name of the executive member responsible will be published here before launch.

8. Status of this statement

Prepared 31 July 2026 for the demonstration build. It will be reviewed and re-dated at launch and at least annually after that, and whenever a substantial change is made to the site.

This statement was prepared by self-assessment against WCAG 2.1 Level AA. It has not yet been reviewed by an independent auditor or tested with users of assistive technology; both are recommended before launch, and this paragraph will be replaced by what those reviews found.

The branch is likely exempt from section 14 of Ontario Regulation 191/11 as an organisation with fewer than fifty employees. We build to the standard anyway. An exemption is a statement about paperwork, not about who is allowed to read a page.

18+ only. You must be physically located in Ontario at the time of purchase.
